You may have Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) patterns that fit the Waterlogged type if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Sluggish, overweight, puffy, swollen, brain fog, dull headaches, dull aches in joints and muscles, weather makes symptoms worse, DOMS, craving sweets, cystic acne, pustular acne, itchy skin, allergies, runny nose, post nasal drip, phlegm in throat or chest, cloudy urine, sluggish pasty stool, daily vaginal discharge, mucus in stool or menstrual blood, tongue coat is greasy or thick.
These are just a sample of symptoms, and certainly not all of them. A complete medical history, physical exam, and clinical signs from a Chinese medicine workup will help identify your pattern diagnosis fits a Waterlogged type.
TCM patterns that fit the Waterlogged type may include Fluid Dysregulation, Qi-Yang Deficiency, Spleen or Kidney Qi-Yang Deficiency, Damp Pouring Downward, Damp-Phlegm Stagnation, and others.
Consult with a qualified doctor of Oriental medicine to confirm your pattern diagnosis.
The following information is generalized and should not be construed as medical advice. Always consult with a healthcare professional who knows your health history before following any advice.
Avoid dampness in your home. Consider a dehumidifier, or consult with an HVAC specialist to optimize reduction of humidity and condensation. Avoid mold exposure. This includes yard waste as well as areas around sinks and plumbing. Learn which foods are often prone to unseen microscopic mold contamination such as coffee and peanuts. Use a HEPA filter in your bedroom and on your vacuum cleaner. Use digestive enzymes or chew on herbs such as hawthorne flakes or fennel seeds after meals. Try guided imagery exercises to reduce stress. Do acupressure point stimulation on acupoints recommended by your acupuncturist. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
Lean toward low glycemic index and low carb foods.
Keep your body in motion to move fluids and blood, to prevent build up and cysts. Set exercise goals and make a plan for achieving them. Choose exercise that makes you sweat hard, and then you need to rehydrate to push those fluids through and prevent the problems that stagnant fluids cause in Waterlogged patterns. Aerobic exercise is best, but only for 30 minutes so you have energy to do it daily. Do not try to get all your exercise in once or twice a week. Do not do exercise that is too intense and leaves you exhausted. Fatigue inhibits minimal circulation of blood and fluids throughout the day. If you are too exhausted, do a brisk walk (not leisurely) with both arms swinging (no dogs on leashes that immobilize one arm). This will help pump your lymphatic system, with lymph nodes concentrated in the underarms and inner front hips (inguinal area).
